Today I attended the funeral of Maggie Wilson MBE. Although it was a sad event it was also a celebration of Maggie’s life. The crematorium was packed in recognition of the warmth felt by the Southside community for the decades of public service given by Maggie. As Keith Smith, the Manager of the Southside Community Centre said in his tribute Maggie was especially passionate about giving young people a decent start in life. For decades she campaigned for better housing and was instrumental in community campaigns for the Southside Community Centre and its cafe, the Nelson Hall and the Crags Sports Centre. Keith told some cracking stories involving Maggie which lifted people’s spirits. As I reminisced fterwards with former councillors Bob Cairns, Keith Geddes and Sheila Gilmore (now MP) we reflected on how one person could make a difference through determination and persistance. An inspiration, Maggie will be missed.
Keith Smith has written a moving tribute to Maggie on the Edinburgh Southside Heritage Group website.
