Last week the Parliament celebrated the official opening of the new session by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The opening of the Parliament offered MSPs the chance to celebrate the many achievements of the people of Scotland.
As part of the celebrations, each MSP was asked to nominate a local hero who has made a difference to people in their area and I chose local campaigner Muriel Williams.
Over the last two decades Muriel has dedicated herself to improving access to transport for disabled and elderly people helping them to improve their quality of life and maintain their independence. During the visit, Muriel paid tribute to the many organisations, colleagues and volunteers she has worked with over the years.
Through her work she has provided a lifeline to many people across the Lothians giving them the opportunity to get out, meet new people and take part in activities they might not otherwise be able to.
This work makes Muriel a real local hero and I was delighted to be able to welcome her to the Parliament.
