Telfer – Urgent Action Needed

A recent sexual assault on a woman at the Telfer Subway has underlined again the importance of additional CCTV in the area.  We need a deterrence and a clear message to be sent that the subway is monitored.   Dedicated CCTV for the subway would also help with identifying perpetrators.

In November of last year I launched an online petition calling for robust action to improve the CCTV coverage at the subway and in January this year I met with representatives of the City of Edinburgh Council and Lothian and Borders Police on a site visit to discuss safety concerns.  I was advised that there was not enough money to install CCTV cameras in the subway.

It is evident that community safety issues remain and that they are very serious.  I am acutely aware that a number of residents feel unsafe and are deeply concerned by the vicious attacks that have occurred in recent years.  The subway is a major thoroughfare for local residents and links key parts of the community.   As the council considers my representations for additional CCTV I will be raising the issue of additional police cover in the area.

I am strongly in favour of further investment in the area and I will be speaking to residents through a local listening campaign to get their views on what should be done.  If you have comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me at sarah.boyack.msp@scottish.parliament.uk or call me on 0131 348 5751
